# Construction of Regular Hexagon – Engineering Drawing

Hexagon is a polygon of six sides. The method given below generally gives a better hexagon than drawing it using protector and ruler.

## Construction of a Regular Hexagon

#### (Let the side be of 50 mm)

### Method I – Construction of regular hexagon

### Procedure :-

- Draw a line AB of given length 50 mm.

- Draw a line AP of any suitable length inclined to AB at an angle of 120 degree.

- Also draw a line BQ of any suitable length inclined to AB at an angle of 120 degree.

- With A and B as centres and radius equal to R=AB=50 mm, draw arcs intersecting line AP and BQ at points F and C respectively. Draw AF and BC thick and dark.

- Draw a line FP1 of any suitable length inclined to AF at an angle of 120 degree. Similarly, draw a line CQ1 of any suitable length inclined to BC at an angle of 120 degree.

- With F and C as centres and radius equal to R=AB=50 mm, draw arcs intersecting line FP1 and CQ1 at points E and D respectively. Draw FE and CD thick and dark. Join DE.

Thus, ABCDEF is the required regular hexagon.

### Method II – Construction of regular hexagon

### Procedure :-

- Draw a circle with O as the centre and radius equal to the edge of regular hexagon i.e. R=AB=50 mm.

- Draw diameter of a circle AD as shown.

- With A as centre and radius equal to R=AB=50 mm, draw two arcs on each side of diameter AD intersecting the circle at points B and F as shown. Join AB and AF.

- With D as centre and radius equal to R=AB=50 mm, draw two arcs on each side of diameter AD intersecting the circle at points C and E as shown. Join CD and DE.

- Join BC and EF.

Thus, ABCDEF is the required regular hexagon.
